ファストパスの役割は待ち時間を短くすることではなかった。パスがあっても、アトラクションの収容能力は変わらないからだ。統計学的にはパスの真の機能はゲストの待ち時間のばらつきを排除することにあるのだと著者は指摘する。実際の待ち時間が不確実なのが本当の問題で、実際に何分待つかは本当の問題ではなかったのだ。ここでもディズニーランドは知覚を管理する魔法を使っている。
本書では統計学の応用のための思考５つの原則として
１ 常に「ばらつき」に注目する
２ 真実より実用性を優先させる
３ 似た者同士を比べる
４ ２種類の間違いの相互作用に注意する
５ 稀すぎる事象を信じない
が示されている。この１つめがディズニーランドのファストパスと高速道路の渋滞緩和策の話であった。他にもクレジットカードのスコア、保険のリスク評価、ドーピング検査と嘘発見器、宝くじの設計などわかりやすい事例が集められている。
